Fairbanks: The Golden Heart Start to Our Alaskan Journey

The historic Riverboat Discovery paddleboat cruising down the Chena River in Fairbanks, Alaska

Hello there, friends! I can hardly contain my excitement as I sit down to share the very first chapter of our upcoming 2027 Alaskan adventure. If you’ve been following along, you know that our 15-day "Join Me in Alaska!" escorted tour is going to be something truly special. It’s more than just a vacation; it’s a journey of the heart, a chance to witness the majestic beauty of God’s creation, and a time to build cherished memories with a community of new friends. We’re also so thankful to be partnering with Jerry at Cruise and Tour Supermarket on his 53rd annual trip, which makes this journey even more special.

Our adventure begins with the flight to Fairbanks, where we’ll be met and transferred to Pike’s Waterfront Lodge to settle in and start soaking up that fresh Alaska air. We are kicking things off in a place that truly lives up to its nickname: Fairbanks, the "Golden Heart City." There is something so warm and welcoming about starting our journey here. It’s where the spirit of the pioneer meets the incredible hospitality of the North, and I just know you’re going to fall in love with it the moment we touch down. And best of all, this trip is personally escorted by Gina and Travis Rogers from the very beginning.

Why We Start in the Golden Heart

Fairbanks sits right in the interior of Alaska, and in late May, the land is waking up in the most vibrant way. The days are getting long, we’re talking nearly 20 hours of daylight!, and there’s a sense of energy in the air that you just have to feel for yourself. We call it the "Golden Heart" not just because of the gold rush history, but because of the genuine, compassionate people who live here.

As a mother and a traveler, I always look for places that feel like home even when you're thousands of miles away. Fairbanks has that "chill" vibe where you can just kick back, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and feel the peace of the wild around you. It’s the perfect spot for us to gather as a group, get to know one another, and prepare our hearts for the 15-day adventure ahead. We’ll be staying here for 2 nights at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge, giving us time to settle in, soak up the beauty of the Chena River, and enjoy these unforgettable first experiences together.

Stepping Back in Time on the Riverboat Discovery

Our first major highlight is a real treat, the Riverboat Discovery. Now, this isn't just any boat ride; it’s a three-hour immersive experience that takes us deep into the soul of Alaska. We’ll board an authentic sternwheeler paddleboat and cruise down the Chena River. Can you just imagine the sound of that red paddlewheel churning the water as we glide past lush green forests?

The Binkley family has been running these boats for over 100 years, and their passion for the river is just contagious! While we’re on board, we’ll get to see:

  • A Bush Plane Demonstration: We’ll watch a floatplane take off and land right next to the boat. It’s a breathtaking reminder of how vital these pilots are to life in the wilderness.

  • The Susan Butcher Family Home: We’ll stop by the home of the late Susan Butcher, the legendary four-time Iditarod champion. Her family still carries on her legacy, and seeing those powerful sled dogs in action is something you’ll never forget!

  • Chena Indian Village: We’ll step off the boat and into a living museum. Together, we’ll learn from Athabascan guides about how their ancestors survived and thrived in this rugged land. From traditional clothing made of moose hide to the way they preserve salmon for the winter, it’s a beautiful, humbling look at a rich culture.

And let me tell you, they serve the most delicious Alaskan blueberry donuts on board! There’s nothing quite like a warm treat and a cup of coffee while you soak up the sun on the deck.

Exploring Fairbanks and North Pole Together

In the short version of our itinerary, our time in Fairbanks centers on two planned excursions: the Riverboat Discovery Excursion and a Fairbanks City Tour with North Pole. That means we’ll not only enjoy the rich history and culture of the river, but we’ll also get a wonderful introduction to the city itself and a fun visit to North Pole, Alaska.

Our Fairbanks City Tour including North Pole is such a fun and memorable way to begin the trip. Together, we’ll get a feel for Fairbanks and its local character before heading over to North Pole for that one-of-a-kind Alaska stop that always brings smiles. Paired with the Riverboat Discovery, these planned excursions give us a beautiful mix of sightseeing, local flavor, and those unforgettable first-day moments that make an escorted trip feel so special.

There’s something so special about beginning this trip with a guided look at the local heart of the area. From Fairbanks’ pioneer spirit to the lighthearted charm of North Pole, this part of the journey gives us a meaningful and joy-filled welcome to Alaska. Whether you love local history, unique small-town stops, or simply taking in the scenery with new friends, this first chapter of the trip is such a sweet way to begin.

Resting Our Heads at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge

After a day of exploring, we need a cozy place to rest and recharge. We’ll be staying at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge for our 2-night stay in Fairbanks. It’s located right on the banks of the Chena River, and the views are just spectacular.

Imagine sitting out on the deck with your new friends, sharing stories of the day's discoveries as the sun lingers high in the sky long into the night. This is where our community really starts to form. We aren't just a tour group; we’re a family on a journey.

Join Us for the Adventure of a Lifetime!

Fairbanks is just the beginning! This is the "land portion" of our trip that sets the stage for everything to come, including our scenic rail journey on the Wilderness Express and our stunning cruise through the glaciers.

If you’ve been dreaming of Alaska, why not make 2027 the year you finally say "yes"? I would be so honored to have you join our group. The trip is personally escorted by Gina and Travis Rogers, and we handle all the details: the airline tickets, the transfers, the hotels, and the best excursions: so all you have to do is show up with an open heart and a spirit of adventure.

We believe that travel is a gift, and we want to help you unwrap it in the most beautiful way possible. Whether you're traveling as a couple, with family, or coming along solo to find new friends, you are welcome here.

Let’s experience the magic of the Golden Heart together. I can’t wait to see those gold pans shining in the sun with you!

Blessings and happy travels,

Gina and Travis Rogers ✝️
