The Wilderness Express: A Room with a View (and a Moving One at That!)

Hey there, friends! Pull up a chair and let’s talk about something truly special. You know, when I think about our upcoming 15-day 'Join Me in Alaska!' adventure in May 2027, my heart just starts to flutter with excitement! This incredible journey will be personally escorted by Gina and Travis Rogers, in partnership with Jerry at Cruise and Tour Supermarket, and we’ve talked about the glaciers and the wildlife, but there is one part of this journey that is pure, unadulterated magic: the Wilderness Express.

Imagine sitting in a plush, reclining leather seat, a warm cup of coffee in your hand, and literally nothing but crystal-clear glass between you and the most breathtaking scenery God ever created. That’s what I call a "room with a view," and the best part? The view is always changing!

Traveling by rail in Alaska isn't just about getting from point A to point B; it’s about the peace that settles over your soul when you finally slow down and let the majesty of the wilderness roll past your window.

360 Degrees of Wonder

The Wilderness Express isn't your average train. These are luxury, glass-domed rail cars designed specifically so you don't miss a single thing. In fact, this domed rail experience is one of the true luxury highlights of our full 15-day journey. Whether it’s a bald eagle soaring high above the pines or the sun hitting the peak of a distant glacier, you have a front-row seat to it all.

The seats are some of the widest on the rails, and they recline so you can really kick back and relax. We spend so much of our lives rushing around: checking off to-do lists and managing schedules: but on the train, we get to just be. We get to sit together, share stories, and witness the vibrant greens of the forests and the deep blues of the Alaskan sky in total comfort.

From Fairbanks to Denali, Then Denali to Anchorage

Our Wilderness Express rail journey includes two beautiful legs: Fairbanks to Denali and Denali to Anchorage. That means we get to settle in, look up through those incredible glass-domed ceilings, and enjoy even more of Alaska’s breathtaking scenery together. From wide-open wilderness and mountain vistas to rushing rivers and evergreen forests, the views are simply unforgettable.

As we travel from Fairbanks to Denali, we’ll begin soaking in that peaceful, majestic Alaskan landscape from the comfort of the dome car. Then, on our second rail leg from Denali to Anchorage, we’ll continue through the heart of the Last Frontier with even more jaw-dropping scenery rolling by our windows.

As we head south from the Denali area toward Anchorage, we’ll cross over the famous Hurricane Gulch. Believe me when I say your breath will catch in your throat as we glide 296 feet above the rushing creek below! It is absolutely magnificent.

We’ll pass through Broad Pass, the highest point on the rail line, where the mountains seem close enough to touch. I love this stretch because it reminds me of how big and wonderful the world is, and how lucky we are to experience it together. Gina and Travis will be right there on board with the group, sharing in every stunning moment with us.

One especially sweet part of our rail journey includes a 1-night stay in the charming town of Talkeetna at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. This rustic yet luxurious lodge offers some of the best views of Denali, if the weather is clear, and it is such a peaceful place to unwind and soak in Alaska’s beauty. We’ll also have time to explore the quirky local shops and cozy cafes in town, which adds such a fun and personal touch to our adventure together.

But the beauty doesn't stop in Anchorage. As we continue down toward Seward, we enter what I think is some of the most stunning coastal territory in the world. We’ll hug the coastline of Turnagain Arm, where the mountains meet the sea. Keep your eyes peeled for Beluga whales in the water and Dall sheep perched on the rocky cliffs! It’s a sensory-rich experience that you just can't get from a car or a bus.

Luxury and Southern Hospitality (in the North!)

Now, you know I love a good meal, and the Wilderness Express does not disappoint. Downstairs from the dome seating, there’s a beautiful dining room where onboard chefs prepare fresh, delicious meals. I’m talking about local Alaskan specialties like Dungeness Crab Bisque or Reindeer Sausage pasta. There’s something so special about enjoying a gourmet lunch while the wilderness of Alaska speeds by outside.

And for my friends who like to feel the wind in their hair, there’s even an outdoor viewing platform. There is nothing like stepping outside, breathing in that crisp, clean Alaskan air, and hearing the rhythmic clack-clack of the tracks as we move through the mountains.

Why This Trip is Different

I’ve been asked why I put so much emphasis on the rail portion of our 15-day itinerary. The truth is, I want this trip to be more than just a vacation. I want it to be a time where we build cherished memories and forge new friendships. And truly, the Wilderness Express Domed Rail experience is one of the most luxurious and memorable parts of our 15-day journey together.

When we’re on the Wilderness Express, we aren't worrying about traffic, directions, or where to stop for lunch. Gina and Travis Rogers will be hosting and personally escorting our entire trip, in partnership with Jerry at Cruise and Tour Supermarket, and we’ve got all of that covered for you! Your only job is to relax, soak up the sun (or the snow!), and enjoy the company of your fellow adventurers. We are a community on this trip: a family: and the train is our rolling living room.
