Waterfalls & Volcanoes: Exploring the Wild Side of Hilo (Day 7)

Aloha, friends! Welcome to Day 7 of this incredible Hawaiian journey together! If you’ve been following along with our 11-day Hawaii itinerary, you know we’ve already seen some magic, but today is truly something special.

As the NCL Pride of America glides into the port of Hilo on the Big Island, you’ll notice a shift. While the other islands are famous for their golden sands, Hilo is the soul of the "Wild Side." It’s lush, it’s rainy, it’s vibrant, and it’s home to some of the most powerful forces of nature on our planet. Today is all about the "Hilo Explorer" experience, a day where you can trade the beach for the breathtaking power of waterfalls and the awe-inspiring majesty of active volcanoes.

Morning: A Symphony of Falling Water

We start our day early because in Hilo, the morning light hitting the mist is a gift you don't want to miss! Our first stop is just minutes from the pier: Rainbow Falls (Wailuku River State Park).

The Magic of Rainbow Falls

There’s a reason this 80-foot waterfall is legendary. If the sun is shining just right, a vibrant rainbow dances in the mist rising from the turquoise pool below. It feels like a little wink from above, reminding us of the beauty in every detail of creation. The falls flow over a massive cave that, according to Hawaiian legend, was the home of Hina, the mother of the demigod Maui. Standing there, listening to the rhythmic roar of the water, you can’t help but feel a deep sense of peace.

The Towering Beauty of Akaka Falls

Next, we head a bit further north to ʻAkaka Falls State Park. This isn't just a waterfall; it’s a full sensory experience. We’ll take a gentle, half-mile paved loop through a rainforest that looks like it’s straight out of a storybook. You’ll be surrounded by wild orchids, bamboo groves, and ferns so green they almost glow.

Then, you see it: Akaka Falls, plunging a staggering 442 feet into a steam-filled gorge. It is absolutely majestic! Seeing that much power and grace in one place is one of those "pinch-me" moments we live for here at Gina's Adventures.

Mid-Day: Walking on the Edge at Volcanoes National Park

After a morning of lush greenery, we shift gears for the main event: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. This is where the earth is literally still being born. As we drive toward the Kīlauea Caldera, the landscape transforms into something otherworldly, rugged, raw, and profoundly beautiful.

The Steam Vents & Sulphur Banks

Our first encounter with the volcano’s heat is at the Steam Vents. Seeing the white clouds of steam rising from the ground where groundwater meets hot volcanic rock is a powerful reminder of the living energy beneath our feet. It’s a bit humbling, isn't it? We’re standing on one of the most active volcanoes in the world, yet there’s a strange, quiet stillness to it all.

Journey into the Earth: Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube)

One of the highlights of the Hilo Explorer excursion is walking through the Thurston Lava Tube (Nāhuku). Imagine a massive underground tunnel formed 500 years ago by a river of molten lava! Walking through this ancient passage, with tree roots hanging through the ceiling and the damp smell of the earth, is an adventure you’ll never forget. It’s a bit dark, a bit mysterious, and completely unforgettable.

Overlooking Kīlauea Caldera

We’ll stop at several overlooks, including the Uēkahuna viewpoint, to gaze into the vast Halemaʻumaʻu Crater. Since the eruptions in 2018, the landscape has changed significantly, and seeing the sheer scale of the caldera is a "wow" moment. We love taking our groups here because it sparks such wonderful conversations about the power of nature and the stories of the people who have called this island home for generations.

Afternoon: Serenity at Liliʻuokalani Gardens

To wrap up our wild day, we head back toward Hilo town for a change of pace. We’ll take a scenic drive down Banyan Drive, where the massive, sprawling trees: many planted by famous visitors like Amelia Earhart: create a leafy canopy over the road.

Our final stop is the Liliʻuokalani Park and Gardens. This 30-acre Japanese-style garden is the largest of its kind outside of Japan, and it is a masterpiece of tranquility. With its arched red bridges, stone lanterns, and peaceful koi ponds overlooking Hilo Bay, it’s the perfect place to kick back and reflect on the day’s adventures.
